How People Work
Understanding what drives people changes how you hire, how you lead, how you coach, and how you sell.

I have been working with a behavioral framework called DISC for over thirty years. I am a certified practitioner, and I use it across every part of the work I do -- hiring, leadership, sales training, and team development. Not because it is a neat exercise, but because when you understand how someone is wired, you stop guessing. You start adapting. And the results speak for themselves.
If any of this sounds familiar...
Do you find clients and customers challenging -- and you are not always sure if the problem is them, you, or just a mismatch?
Do you have coworkers or team members who frustrate you in ways you cannot quite put your finger on?
Are your coaching conversations not producing the change in behavior you are looking for, even when you have had the same conversation more than once?
Or do you look at your own results and wonder if you could be working more effortlessly and producing more with less friction?
That is exactly what understanding behavioral styles is designed to solve.
What DISC is and how I use it
Two things DISC actually builds:
Behavioral Flexibility
Most of us have a default way of operating. We communicate a certain way, make decisions a certain way, and handle pressure a certain way. The problem is that the people around us -- customers, team members, direct reports -- are not all wired the same way we are.
Behavioral flexibility is the ability to adapt how you communicate based on how someone else is wired. Not to change who you are, but to expand your range. Because the behavior that comes naturally to you is not always the one that is going to be most effective with the person in front of you. When you only do things one way, you are leaving results on the table.
Emotional Objectivity
When you understand behavioral styles, you stop taking things personally that were never personal to begin with. A dominant under pressure who comes across as abrupt is not attacking you -- that is just how they respond under pressure. A steady person who needs to involve three other people before making a decision is not being difficult -- that is how they process.
Emotional objectivity means you can stay clear in moments that used to get under your skin, because you understand what is actually happening. That makes you a better leader, a better coach, and a better salesperson.
How I use DISC
I use DISC across four areas. All of them come back to the same idea: the one with the ask is apt to adapt.
Hiring and Candidate Vetting
A resume tells you what someone has done. DISC helps you understand how they are wired -- and whether that fit is going to work in your environment, alongside your team, and with your own style as a leader.
I work with owners and companies to evaluate candidates before a hire is made. That means looking at the candidate's profile and at how that profile is likely to interact with the culture they are stepping into and the person they will report to. A strong candidate who is a style mismatch can still be the wrong hire. It is much better to know that before you make the offer.
Owner and Leadership Coaching
I work with owners and leaders to understand their own behavioral style and how it shapes the way they run meetings, deliver feedback, handle conflict, and set expectations. Once you can see your own profile clearly, you start to see your team differently. You stop wondering why what works with one person completely fails with another.
Sales Manager Development
I work with sales managers to apply DISC to their current team -- not in the abstract, but rep by rep, based on what they are actually seeing. Coaching becomes more precise. Accountability becomes clearer.
DISC is also built directly into the Sell It or Schedule It Sales Manager Training, because knowing how each rep on your team is wired is foundational to coaching them effectively.
Sales Team Training
DISC training teaches your team to read the room, adapt how they communicate, and stop losing sales because they treated every customer the same way.
DISC is also built directly into Sell It or Schedule It, because understanding your customer's behavioral style is one of the first and most critical steps in the selling process.
How the assessment works
I use two types of assessments depending on what we are working on.
The first is a single-science DISC assessment, specific to a role -- DISC for sales, DISC for management, or DISC for executives. It shows how someone's behavioral style maps to the demands of that particular job, not just their style in general.
The second is a two-science assessment that combines DISC with motivators and drivers. This one is especially useful when you have two people on your team with similar DISC profiles who behave completely differently. The motivators piece explains why. Two people can be wired similarly and still be driven by entirely different things -- and knowing that changes how you coach them.
For teams, I also build a group wheel, which maps everyone's profile together so the whole team can see why they communicate the way they do with each other. When people can see the dynamic visually -- why there is friction between certain people, or why certain combinations just work -- the conversation changes completely.
Every engagement includes a debrief. The assessment by itself does not change anything. The conversation is where the insight becomes something you can actually use.
