his month’s theme is Being a Student: Commit to Continuous Learning to Stay Ahead.
Embrace a growth mindset to keep your skills sharp and your sales performance strong.

This week: BEing a Student… Cultivate a ‘beginner’s mind.’

This series is about keeping a keenly curious nature about the world and what’s in it.

The Buddhists call it a beginner’s mind—when you bring nothing to everything and see what unfolds.

As adults, we tend to bring what we know to new conversations and circumstances. We align what’s new with what’s familiar so that we can feel comfortable and “in control.” But curiosity, rather than certainty, supports the beginner’s mind direction—and it’s a cultivated practice.

Why Beginner’s Mind Matters

It starts by asking questions. It includes not looking for an opening to offer what is already known. And by doing this, an opening is created to learn something—and to experience an awakening.

When we lead with certainty, we unintentionally close the door on opportunities to learn what really matters to the person in front of us. Curiosity—not certainty—is what opens the door to understanding.

The Challenge

It’s human nature to disagree and to want to be “right.” To correct. To prove our expertise.
Resist that temptation. Instead, ask more questions. Let curiosity guide you.

You may be surprised by how much more your clients share when they sense your genuine interest in their priorities. That’s when trust grows—and sales follow.

Take Action This Week

In your next conversation, try this:

  • Pause your “expert mode.”
  • Ask one more thoughtful question than you usually would.
  • Resist the urge to jump in with your solution too soon.
  • Notice what new information surfaces.

By choosing curiosity over certainty, you create space for learning, for connection, and for better outcomes.

Now, go cultivate your curiosity!
