Being Coachable: Open Yourself to Feedback for Sustained Improvement

Last month we explored being a student — cultivating awareness and curiosity. This month, we take it a step further. Being coachable builds on that same mindset, but adds the presence of a coach who helps reveal blind spots, sharpen your focus, and guide your progress.

Being coachable is like being a student, the difference being the direct involvement of a coach in the learning process. A coach will help you to identify thoughts and actions that might be in your blind spot as well as helping you to articulate and strategize what you want to accomplish.

With a coach, you will start with an intention and timeline: What do you want to achieve? By when do you want to achieve this?

Your coach will want to understand you and find out what kind of support or direction you need to succeed, as well as provide the skill, process, and insights to guide you on your journey to achievement.

Action Items to Practice Being Coachable
  • Set your intention: Write down one goal you want to achieve in the next 90 days.

  • Invite feedback: Ask a colleague, mentor, or coach, “What’s one thing you see me doing that holds me back?”

  • Listen without defense: Take in the feedback fully before responding.

  • Apply one change: Choose a single action you can implement immediately, and track your progress.

  • Reflect weekly: Ask yourself, “What did I learn this week, and how did I grow from it?”

Now, go ask yourself – are you up for it?
