Take Two Steps Forward, One Step Back

Starting new practices and habits isn’t a smooth process.  After the initial excitement and inspiration wears off and old habits start to call to us, we feel pulled in a couple of directions: moving toward the future that we envision and desire and being tethered to a familiar way of doing things. We start to tell ourselves that the current reality is not so bad….and maybe we just need to live with it.

Fear. Resignation. Hopelessness.

When we know that breakdowns will occur or we may falter, we can build that into our consciousness or our process.  It’s like runners training to run fast by having a long slow run day…or by having an easy run day following a lower body day at the gym. Pacing ourselves and allowing for setbacks to occur without losing our resolve and our focus.

Yes, it’s tough to do. That’s why having a clear game plan matters and a process for review and assessment. And, while you’re at it, get a buddy. Someone who has your back and will listen without judgment so you can unload when you need to…and won’t let the setbacks stop you. Just let setbacks be setbacks.

Congratulations on making it this far. Now go get a buddy and celebrate your successes!
